112,163 layoffs have happened in 2023 as of Feb 2nd, an average of over 3,300 per day. It can be devastating to receive a layoff email, especially if you’ve been at the company for many years, Imagine being at Google for two decades and getting fired via email. So here let’s see some tips that can make you a survivalist in this layoff.

Know where the growth is

Ask yourself where the jobs are and where the growth is in the tech industry. Currently, one of the most in-demand skills is Javascript and React. While it may be the simplest path to employment, it’s important not to get lost on Twitter and to explore other paths as well.

Make yourself different

When applying for jobs, it’s important to differentiate yourself from other applicants. Ask yourself what makes you different and how you can show that you have more value than just another UI engineer. Consider learning other languages like Node, Go, Python, or Rust, or having experience with Chrome Performance Tools or debugging memory issues.

Be prepared for tomorrow

Many people just do the minimum at their job to maximize what they get out of it, but those who are curious, driven, and always researching new ways to solve problems will weather layoffs much better. Ask yourself what language or tech will be popular in the next 10 years and focus on becoming great at it.

Practice interviewing

Interviews are a skill, and the more you practice, the better you’ll get. Make yourself the developer that people want to work with and be passionate about tech. Give great advice and be excited about tech.

Layoffs can be a scary and uncertain time, but it’s important to remain focused on what you can control. By knowing where the growth is in the tech industry, differentiating yourself from other applicants, being prepared for the future, and practicing your interviewing skills, you’ll be well-positioned to weather layoffs and find your next job.
